For motorhome and caravan travellers, it’s one of the most rewarding times to explore the country, with spectacular scenery around almost every corner. Discover snow-capped mountains, frosty landscapes, alpine lakes, misty forests, star-filled skies, and places where winter actually enhances the experience.
1. Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park
Arguably New Zealand’s ultimate winter landscape. Few places capture the magic of winter quite like Mount Cook National Park. Snow-draped peaks, turquoise glacial lakes and crystal-clear alpine air combine to create one of the country’s most spectacular cold-weather landscapes. The iconic Hooker Valley Track offers breathtaking mountain views without requiring advanced hiking experience, while frosty mornings and star-filled nights add to the region’s unforgettable appeal.
2. Lindis Pass
If dramatic and scenic winter drives are on your wish list, look no further. Golden tussock hills are often dusted with snow, creating a landscape that feels both rugged and serene. The ever-changing light across the hills makes this a favourite among photographers, whether viewed under a blanket of snow or sparkling with frost. The drive itself is an attraction with the dramatic Lindis Pass linking the Mackenzie Basin with Central Otago. Close by is the infamous Ahuriri River offering world-class fishing in astonishing scenery.
3. Lake Pukaki
Few places deliver a more striking colour palette than Lake Pukaki. The lake’s vivid blue waters sit beneath the towering Southern Alps. Winter brings an added sense of grandeur as the mountains become heavily snow-covered. Whether viewed from the shoreline, a roadside lookout or during a journey through the Mackenzie Country, Lake Pukaki consistently delivers some of the country’s most memorable scenery.
4. Milford Sound
Winter transforms Milford Sound into an even more dramatic destination. Snow settles on the towering peaks, waterfalls tumble from sheer cliffs, and mist often drifts through the fiord, creating an atmosphere that feels almost otherworldly. The cooler months also tend to bring fewer visitors, allowing travellers to experience the grandeur of the fiord in a more peaceful setting. Whether viewed from a cruise or from one of the many scenic lookouts, Milford Sound is a destination that leaves a lasting impression.
5. Lake Tekapo
Lake Tekapo is stunning year-round, but winter elevates it to another level. The lake’s vibrant turquoise waters contrast beautifully against snow-covered mountains, creating one of New Zealand’s most iconic landscapes. The Church of the Good Shepherd becomes especially photogenic when surrounded by winter scenery, while the region’s status as part of the Dark Sky Reserve makes it a prime location for stargazing. On clear nights, the Milky Way stretches across the sky with remarkable clarity.
6. Hanmer Springs

Surrounded by mountains and forests, the alpine village often enjoys frosty mornings and occasional snowfalls that add to its charm. The famous thermal pools are a particular highlight during the colder months, offering the chance to soak in steaming water while surrounded by crisp winter air. It’s an ideal destination for travellers looking to combine scenery with relaxation.
7. Glenorchy
Situated at the northern end of Lake Wakatipu, Glenorchy is one of the South Island’s hidden gems. In winter, the surrounding mountains are often blanketed in snow, while calm conditions create beautiful reflections across the lake. The drive from Queenstown to Glenorchy is frequently ranked among New Zealand’s most scenic journeys, and winter only enhances its appeal. Every bend seems to reveal another spectacular view.
8. Lake Hāwea
Surrounded by rugged mountains and expansive open landscapes, the lake takes on a remarkable clarity during winter, with calm days often producing mirror-like reflections of snow-capped peaks. The journey along the lake’s shoreline is one of the South Island’s most scenic drives, particularly on crisp winter mornings when frost blankets the surrounding countryside.
