Preparing your caravan for summer adventures

Travel advice: Preparing your caravan for summer adventures

Getting your caravan road-ready for summer is an exciting task. The team at Star Insure offers some practical suggestions and advice on checking your caravan thoroughly to ensure it’s safe, functional, and comfortable for upcoming adventures.

Before you take to the road for fresh adventures, set some time aside to do a pre-summer check.

Tyres and wheels

  • Tread and condition: look for signs of wear, cracks, or bulges. If your tyres are worn out, replace them.
  • Tyre pressure: check the tyre pressure against the manufacturer’s recommendations. Deflated or overinflated tyres can affect fuel efficiency and handling. Note: ensure you check that your spare tyre is in good condition and properly inflated.

Brake System (if applicable)

  • Test the brakes to ensure they’re responsive
  • Check the brake fluid levels

Lights

  • Test all lights (taillights, brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights, etc.), replace any blown bulbs, and clean any grime off the lenses.
  • Batteries and electrical system
  • Test the battery. Plug in a few devices to ensure the electrical outlets and circuit breakers work.
  • Ensure there’s no corrosion on the battery terminals.
  • Fully charge the battery before you hit the road. Consider replacing your battery if it’s old or weak.
  • If you intend to use external power, check that all extension cords and adapters are in good condition.
  • Test the inverter and/or generator to ensure it operates smoothly and has enough fuel.
  • Test your appliances. Turn on the stove, oven and fridge to ensure they work correctly.

Water and plumbing

  • Ensure both fresh and grey water tanks are clean.
  • If your caravan has a water filter, replace it if needed.
  • Check for leaks or cracks in hoses and pipes.
  • Ensure the water pump is functioning.
  • Test the water heater to ensure it’s working properly.
  • Drain and sanitise the water system before you start using it for the season.
