RV industry expert Andrew Tapp offers a light-hearted guide to love, maintenance and avoiding heartbreak on the open road. In his regular Motorhome Maintenance column, where he shares tips and personal observations from 20+ years in the motorhome industry, he helps determine whether your motorhome is a summer fling or a long-term thing.
Compare the excitement of a new relationship to the excitement of setting off for a summer trip in your motorhome – and the shock when you realise your “perfect match” has a few flaws you didn’t notice.
If you’ve ever found yourself wondering whether your relationship with your RV is becoming… well, complicated, you’re not alone.
As it turns out, the “romance” arc of motorhome ownership looks suspiciously like the romance arc of human relationships, complete with the honeymoon phase, the first argument, emotional misunderstandings, and the occasional dramatic breakup.
Let’s talk about love, maintenance, heartbreak, and the pre-purchase red flags you really shouldn’t ignore.
The Honeymoon Phase vs Reality
It’s love at first sight. The online listing has perfect lighting, a flattering description, and a charming interior. You scroll through the photos thinking, could this be the one?
You meet in person. Everything feels right. The test drive is dreamy. Before you know it, you’re imagining summer sunsets in idyllic freedom-camping spots and long weekends away. This is the honeymoon phase, the bit where emotions run high and sensible decision-making is, well, perhaps a little compromised. It’s also when a pre-purchase inspection can save your heart (and your wallet) from later devastation. Love may be blind… but your inspector isn’t.
The First Argument
All relationships hit rocky patches – and with RVs, those patches often involve water, electrics, and mysterious noises that appear precisely 200km from home.
Maybe it’s the first hot afternoon of January and you notice something isn’t quite right:
- A harmless-looking drip that somehow turns into a full-fledged leak
- A squeak that sounds like two mice having a domestic argument
- A new smell that can only be described as “vaguely tragic”
- A latch that suddenly refuses to latch
- A light that flickers like a horror-movie warning
This is the moment many RV owners think ‘Was it always like this? Has my motorhome… changed? And the truth is, yes. It has changed – because summer brings out issues that winter hides.
The temperatures go up. You drive more. You shower more. You cook more. You use more power, water, ventilation and batteries than any other season. Weak systems reveal themselves. Neglected ones protest loudly. And systems that are “fine” in May can become “not fine at all” by Christmas.
This is where your RV starts dropping hints – and ignoring those hints is how small arguments turn into breakups.
“It’s Not You, It’s Me…”
Your motorhome might not send dramatic texts or slam doors, but it definitely has its own way of signalling trouble in paradise. Before your summer adventures turn into a soap opera, let’s explore the classic breakup signs it uses to get your attention.
“You’ve changed!”
Translation: Moisture damage has been quietly getting worse.
Moisture doesn’t announce itself dramatically. It creeps. It sneaks. It hides behind panels, beneath windows, and under floors – and summer heat makes the smell and softness more obvious.
At RV Inspections, I often find moisture issues months (sometimes years) before owners realise the scale. Our German-engineered moisture-metre reads what your nose won’t.
“We want different things.”
Translation: Your batteries are giving up.
Summer’s higher power consumption (fans, fridges, devices, more lighting) exposes tired batteries fast. A battery that starts a chilly July morning might completely fail by New Year’s Eve.
“I need space.”
Translation: You’ve overloaded me, and my chassis is suffering.
Extra camping chairs, paddleboards, e-bikes, and an enthusiastic grocery shop at Pak’n’Save can push weight limits. When a motorhome says it needs space, it really means it needs a weighbridge.
“You never listen to me.”
Translation: Those creaks, warnings, and indicator lights were not optional.
Mechanical complaints always start quietly. Then they escalate. Just like real relationships.
Maintaining a Healthy Relationship – Showing Your RV Some Love
Couples go to counselling to prevent breakdowns. RV owners do maintenance for the same reason. Think of maintenance as quality time. If you want to keep your relationship strong, here are some summer maintenance essentials you shouldn’t miss:
Moisture Checks
Hot weather intensifies odours and reveals soft spots. If you feel a “spongey moment” underfoot – that’s your RV begging for help. Most owners don’t notice damp until it’s advanced, but the metre sees it instantly.
Tyres & Running Gear
Long distances + summer heat = increased tyre stress. Make sure you check sidewalls, age codes and pressures. If the tyres are more than six years old, they’re retirement age.
Batteries & Charging Systems
Hot days strain cooling fans, fridges, and power systems. Make sure your batteries and charging setup are healthy before you head off grid.
Water Systems
Smells, slow pumps, and “Why is my shower turning into a dribble?” all tend to spike mid-summer.
Ventilation & Seals
Heat exposes deteriorating seals faster, which leads to leaks.
Gas Systems
Not just safety – efficiency. Summer cooking puts systems under heavy load.
If your motorhome has been feeling a little ignored lately and you’re wondering just how strained the relationship has become – and what it will take to rekindle the spark – RV Inspections NZ’s new Health Check service is the perfect way to get things back on track.
Meet the Parents
In RV terms, that means:
- Service history
- WOF/COF results
- Gas certifications
- Electrical warrants
- Ownership records
- Previous repair documentation
If these documents are “lost” unavailable, or “somewhere at home”, assume there’s a dramatic family backstory.
Avoiding Rebound Regrets – How to Know if Your Next RV Is ‘The One’
Just like choosing a partner, choosing an RV is easier when you know the signs of compatibility. Remember – good looks aren’t enough. A shiny, newly polished RV does not guarantee structural integrity. What matters most is what you can’t see – and inspections exist for exactly that reason.
If you decide to break up with your current RV – or you’re tempted by something newer, shinier, and more alluring – beware of the rebound effect: A gorgeous RV appears online. You fall in love instantly. You act too fast. You regret everything. Avoid this by bringing in a neutral third party with no emotional investment. A pre-purchase inspection is the relationship counsellor who says, “I know they look good, but let’s see what’s underneath”.
A two-hour inspection could save you from a $20,000 heartbreak.
Andrew Tapp’s 23 years of industry experience mean he has seen every version of a “charming RV with secret issues”. He knows the red flags better than anyone. He’s seen it all. He knows which brands age well, which repairs are acceptable, and which issues are deal-breakers.
Final Advice
Summer adventures are better when your motorhome is reliable, comfortable, and drama-free. Whether you’re maintaining your current RV romance or searching for your next great love, remember to trust your gut, watch for red flags, don’t rush into rebound purchases and always bring in professional backup.
With the right maintenance – and the right inspection – your RV relationship can last years, even decades. Here’s to a long, happy life together for you and your RV.
