Park up on Paeroa’s main thoroughfare, Belmont Road (SH2), and prepare to spend a few hours or more trawling through a wonderful array of vintage, antique and retro stores. There’s one after the other, each one an Aladdin’s Cave of treasure.

Once you’ve enjoyed a bit of retail therapy, head along to Willoughby Street, where you’ll discover The Refinery, a retro-inspired cafe with a menu to match – from mince on toast to homemade scones and quiches.

The décor is sure to remind you of your childhood, and if you fancy a longer stay, there’s also boutique accommodation on offer from $99 a night.

Cosy Corner – Mount Maunganui

Twine Antiques – Waikuku, Canterbury

Located on Main North Road in Waikuku, Twine Antiques & Collectibles is hard to miss. Set inside a behemoth brick building which is also home to a great cafe, Twine is jam-packed with vintage goodies, from kitchenware and furniture to LPs and posters.

Set aside an hour at least for a good look through, perhaps with a bite to eat or coffee at the Brickmill Cafe next door.

Enjoy a stay in a retro-inspired Kombi cabin at this hidden gem located on the shores of beautiful Lake Taupo.

You won’t see it from the main road, but if you head down Motuoapa Esplanade, about 9km north of Turangi, you’ll know you’ve found it when you see the colourful Kombi cabins and cool boat sheds.
