Review: Elddis Autoquest Apex 185

A practical layout, proven build, and everything required for comfortable road travel… the Elddis Autoquest Apex 185, part of the new Autoquest Apex range, is a no-fuss motorhome that focuses on getting the basics right, says Claire Smith

With more than 60 years of manufacturing behind it, British brand Elddis has built a reputation for producing well-designed, distinctive motorhomes. The company traces its roots back to founder Siddle Cook, who started building caravans in the 1960s, and that heritage is still reflected in the way its motorhomes are designed today. (For those interested in a little trivia, the name Elddis is Siddle’s name spelt back-to-front.)

The Autoquest range has been a mainstay in Elddis’ lineup for years, reflecting a typically British approach – practical, functional, and easy to use. Distributed locally by TrailLite Group, the Autoquest Apex 185 fits neatly into that mould.

Impressively, the new Elddis Autoquest Apex lineup offers five layouts across the range, with our review focusing on the 185 model.

This specific model brings together a twin-bed layout with a solid level of standard equipment, all at a price point that appeals to a wide range of buyers. At just over seven metres in length, it’s a manageable size on the road while still offering plenty of interior space.

Layout

The Apex 185 follows a popular layout, and one I particularly like. Up front, the lounge makes use of the swivel cab seats and long bench seating, creating a comfortable, open space to relax in during the day. The two Isofix passenger travelling seats conveniently stow away under the lounge couches.

Moving through the centre, the kitchen runs along one side. Just behind, twin single beds sit lengthways, creating a dedicated sleeping area, while at the rear, the bathroom runs full width.

The twin bench seats create a nicely sized seating area

The lounge/dinette area is set up with twin bench seats on either side, working in with the swivel cab seats to create a nicely sized, relaxed seating area.

The table can be folded down and stored away its own dedicated cabinet when not in use to open things up again, which helps keep the space feeling uncluttered during the day. Large windows on both sides bring in plenty of natural light, so it never feels closed in.

Storage is provided with overhead lockers running along both sides, as well as space under the seating. At night, this area converts into an additional bed, adding a bit of flexibility if you’ve got extra people on board.

Kitchen

While compact, the kitchen includes all the must-haves

The kitchen sits centrally, and while it’s compact, it includes all the must-haves such as a three-burner gas hob with electric plate, along with a full oven and grill below. A microwave is included too, which is always handy for quick meals or reheating.

The sink is a good size, finished in black, which adds a nice contrast against the lighter surfaces. The fridge sits neatly under the bench, easy to reach, and there’s decent prep space along with a mix of cupboards and drawers for storage.

Sleeping

Two single beds provide a dedicated sleeping area

At the rear, the twin single bed layout is my personal favourite. Mainly because when it comes to those inevitable middle-of-the-night loo trips, there’s no clambering to get out or disturbing the other sleeper.

It also makes the day-to-day stuff easier, such as making the beds, and just moving about the living space. Both beds are a good length, so they’ll suit most adults comfortably, and with everything set up and always ready, there’s no need to convert anything at the end of the day.

Storage is a treat with both overhead lockers and underbed storage – offering a tidy solution for space to keep all of the essentials and more – and within easy reach.

Windows on either side bring in plenty of light, adding to the feeling of spaciousness. As mentioned, the lounge up front converts into a second double if needed.

Bathroom

Right: The layout of the bathroom ticks all the boxes

Sitting at the rear, the bathroom runs full width, and it’s a layout that really ticks the boxes in terms of usable space. Having that extra width to work with makes it feel noticeably more open than you might expect.

It’s fully self-contained, with a separate shower on one side, the vanity in the middle, and the toilet and storage on the other. The shower is well set up, with a sliding halo shower head, while a large mirror above the vanity helps keep things feeling light and open.

Storage is well covered too, with a tall cupboard, additional shelving, and extra space under the sink for the everyday essentials. The finish is clean and simple, with light timber tones offset with crisp whites.

Features like cruise control and steering wheel-mounted controls help take a bit of the effort out of longer drives

The Apex 185 is built on the Series 2 Fiat Ducato platform, running a 140hp engine with an automatic transmission.

Visibility is good, the driving position is adjustable, and features like cruise control and steering wheel-mounted controls help take a bit of the effort out of longer drives.

There’s a solid list of safety features as well, including ABS, emergency braking assistance, and airbags.

In terms of power and water, the Autoquest Apex 185 offers 180W of solar paired with a 120Ah AGM deep cycle battery, along with 120L of fresh water and 75L of grey, which provides a decent level of independence without needing to plug in straight away.

Heating and hot water are handled by the Whale system, which is quick to get going and easy to manage, while the motorhome itself is fully insulated to the highest standard Grade 3, helping keep things comfortable across a range of conditions (and coping with those sneaky Kiwi weather condition changes).

Build quality is another area worth noting. Elddis uses its bonded construction method, known as the ZIP system. This is designed to improve strength and reduce the risk of water ingress over time. Inside, the HaloTEC wall finish gives a clean, durable surface that’s easy to maintain.

Noteworthy extras

Beyond the main layout and core features, there are a few extras here that round things out nicely.

Storage is one area where a bit of extra thought has gone in. The overhead lockers include removable shelving. This gives additional flexibility depending on what you’re carrying. It’s a small detail, but one that makes a difference once you start loading things in.

The inclusion of removable carpets is another practical touch, especially for keeping things clean when you’re in and out regularly. Outside, the awning makes it easy to extend your living space and enjoy the outdoors shaded from the weather. You’ve also got a smart TV on board, covering the basics for downtime, along with a low entry step that makes access that bit easier.

Summary

If you like the idea of having your own space while travelling, the Apex 185 is well worth a look. The twin-bed layout makes day-to-day living noticeably easier, whether it’s getting in and out at night, making the beds, or just having room to move without getting in each other’s way.

The full-width rear bathroom adds to that sense of space, and combined with a well-equipped kitchen and a comfortable lounge up front, it’s a setup that holds up well when you’re spending more than just a night or two inside.

For couples in particular, it’s a layout that’s hard to fault. Add in the solid spec list and accessible price point, and it shapes up as a practical option without paying for features you may not need.
