Travelling fulltime is a constant adventure for Tom and Jordan Tasman, of Tasman Travels. The couple thrive on discovering new spots as they continue to explore New Zealand year-round. One of their favourite recent destinations saw them soak away any fatigue in the thermal delights of Ōpuke Thermal Pool & Spa, as they immersed themselves in all things Methven.
Relax at Ōpuke, Explore Methven: A Thermal Escape Beyond the Slopes
Nestled in the heart of Canterbury, Methven is often celebrated for its winter sports and alpine charm. But beyond the ski season, this town has so much more to offer, at the centre of it all is Ōpuke Thermal Pool & Spa, a haven of relaxation and rejuvenation. With its solar-powered thermal pools, world-class spa treatments, and gourmet dining, Ōpuke is a destination in its own right, perfect for unwinding after a day of adventure in Methven’s breathtaking landscapes.
Ōpuke Thermal Pool & Spa: A Sanctuary of Serenity
Ōpuke Thermal Pool & Spa combines modern comfort with sustainability. Heated using solar energy and filled with pristine water from the Rakaia River, it’s an environmentally conscious choice for those looking to relax in nature’s embrace.
Tranquillity Pools: Adults-Only

We began our visit in the Tranquillity Pools, an adult only retreat designed for complete relaxation. The warm, mineral-rich water provided instant relief from the crisp alpine air, while uninterrupted views of the Southern Alps added to the sense of escape. The pools had a calm, almost meditative atmosphere, making it easy to switch off and unwind, floating in silence, enjoying quiet conversation, or simply soaking in the panoramic scenery.
Discovery Pools: Family-Friendly
For families, the Discovery Pools offer a fun and welcoming space where children can splash and play while parents relax. During school terms, when fewer children visit, the Discovery Pools become a quieter and more affordable option for adults looking to enjoy the thermal experience without the added cost of the Tranquillity Pools.
Ōpuke Spa
Our spa experience at Ōpuke was the perfect way to unwind. We started with the Essential Facial, a 45-minute treatment tailored to our skin’s needs, leaving it noticeably softer and more hydrated. Next was the Aromatic Relaxation Massage, a full-body treatment using our choice of scented oils. Focused on relieving tension and promoting deep relaxation, it was an ideal experience for individuals or couples.
We also tried the Rasul Steam Room, a 45-minute ritual inspired by traditional Arabian steam treatments. Under twinkling starlights, we applied New Zealand Glacial Clay as a face and body mask while enjoying the warm, aromatic steam. The treatment ended with a gentle tropical shower, leaving our skin feeling incredibly smooth and refreshed.
Swim-Up Bar & Locally Sourced Dining

No visit to Ōpuke is complete without a stop at the swim-up bar. There’s something special about sipping a cocktail while immersed in warm, mineral-rich water, and the signature Methven Mule, a refreshing blend of locally inspired flavours, was a definite highlight. For those who prefer something simple, the bar also offers complimentary water to keep guests hydrated.
The dining experience at Ōpuke is just as impressive as the pools. The menu, crafted with locally sourced ingredients showcases the region’s finest produce. From delicious platters and crispy wood-fired pizzas to the rich flavours of the Tamar Beef Sirloin, every dish is prepared with care and attention to detail. The combination of fresh ingredients and expert preparation makes dining at Ōpuke an experience in itself, best enjoyed at a leisurely pace after a long soak.
Methven’s Food Scene
Beyond Ōpuke, Methven’s food scene is full of hidden gems, offering a mix of casual and refined dining options. From casual bites to more refined dining, Methven’s eateries cater to every taste and some of our favourites were: :
- Ski Time Restaurant A must-visit, with a welcoming atmosphere and a menu featuring delicious meals made from high quality local produce. Whether you’re after a hearty breakfast, a long lunch, or a relaxed dinner, Ski Time delivers consistently great food.
- AQUA Known for its fresh, vibrant dishes that cater to a variety of tastes, AQUA is a standout choice for those looking for something creative and full of flavour.
Where to Stay

For self-contained motorhomes & caravans: NZMCA members can enjoy the Methven Trotting Club, a convenient and budget-friendly base.
For a touch of luxury: Ski Time offers a range of comfortable stays. We stayed in one of their gorgeous Two-Bedroom Apartments, which provided the perfect mix of style and relaxation.
Walking & Biking
Methven is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, with a variety of walking and cycling trails catering to different skill levels.
Walking Trails:
- Methven Walkway – A popular 12km loop that suits both walkers and mountain bikers, featuring sections accessible via country roads.
- Mount Alford Track – Located in Alford Scenic Reserve, this trail offers stunning scenery and a rewarding hike.
- Mount Hutt Forest Loop Track – Found in Awa Awa Rata Reserve, this loop links Alder Track, Ridge Track, and Scotts Saddle Track for an immersive nature experience.
- Lake Clearwater Loop – A scenic route around Lake Clearwater in Hakatere Conservation Park, ideal for walking or mountain biking.

- Piwakawaka Walk – Enjoy this short trail on its own or as part of the Methven Walkway.
While Methven may be best known for its ski slopes, our visit proved it’s just as magical year-round. Whether soaking in the solar-powered pools of Ōpuke, indulging in world-class spa treatments, discovering local dining gems, or exploring the great outdoors, Methven has something for every traveller.
