Day trip to Malamala Beach Club

Day trip to Malamala Beach Club

I wasn’t sure what to expect when we signed up for a day trip to Malamala Island Beach Club. Although an online search had sparked curiosity, along with yearning for that iconic Fiji turquoise water and white sand beach, there was also some scepticism about how authentic the whole thing would feel and the extent of the ‘club’ atmosphere.

With AI causing distrust around such seemingly idyllic photos, it turns out picture-perfect spots like Malamala really do exist – no trickery or false advertising required.

It was the Beach Club aspect that had us uncertain about what to expect. Would there be too much of a party vibe with more noise than nature? Could we find a spot of solace amidst other eager visitors?

With a full catamaran of guests on the 30-minute trip from Port Denarau, it didn’t take long to get a feel for the upcoming vibe, with the water slowly changing colour enroute, from deeper blue to that luminous, almost glassy turquoise the Mamanucas are known for.

Malamala appeared in the distance, a misleadingly small, but perfectly formed dot on the horizon, ringed with bright sand and low palms. As you slowly approach, glimpses of white beach beckon.

Fijian staff greet arrivals with easy smiles, genuinely welcoming and setting the tone for the day. A long jetty over crystal clear water leads you onto pristine sand. You’re suddenly barefoot or wishing you were.

It’s not an overwhelming arrival. There’s no grand entrance arch or staged moment. We simply amble along the beach, up to the clubhouse where the infinity pool, central restaurant and bar, and music are centred. It’s social but not overwhelming, polished but not pretentious, and with enough room to find your own pace and space.

The bar and restaurant serve a Pacific-inspired menu of fresh flavours from salad wraps and ceviche-style bites to more substantial plates, and a good range of cocktails, beers, wines and mocktails.

A slice of Island life

We’d booked ahead for one of the private beachfront cabanas. If there was one decision that shaped the overall experience, it was that.

Tucked back from the shoreline with uninterrupted views across the horizon, the cabana was our own uninterrupted sanctuary within the wider buzz of the island.

Deliciously comfortable daybeds afforded shade when we wanted it, sun when we didn’t, and – most luxuriously – space. Space to leave our bags without thinking about them. Space to sprawl out in comfort with all the accoutrements of a successful day (a good book, cold drink with ice clinking in the glass and delicious fresh food) – all hand delivered by a butler throughout the day. The only thing we had to do was relax, browse the menu of available options (book a one-hour massage), and stroll from our bure across white sand to the crystal-clear ocean for frequent dips.

We took a leisurely pre-lunch stroll around the island, which took about 20 minutes in total and showcased the different options available to suit individual preferences – some people sprawled on loungers under swaying palms, eyes half-closed in the sun. Others were clustered around the resort-style infinity pool, drinks in hand, laughing into the afternoon. We decided we were more than content with our own slice of paradise, tucked away in a quiet cabana.

Our butler service was there from the moment we arrived, but never in a hovering way. It was personal and intuitive; drinks appeared when glasses were empty, and food orders were taken without fuss. There’s something deeply relaxing about not having to queue at a bar or flag someone down. It made the day feel seamless and unhurried.

And then as if things couldn’t get any better, an hour-long massage under swaying palm trees, with just the sound of the ocean to accompany, was complete bliss.

The art of relaxing

Looking back at this luscious day we unanimously agreed on the best part: there’s no pressure. If your idea of paradise is doing nothing; just lying back and listening to the ocean, Malamala makes space for that. I spent nearly an hour simply perched at the shoreline, watching the light play on the water, lulled by the sound of waves.

If you prefer a more action filled day, snorkelling, kayaking, and paddleboarding are all complimentary, with everything you might need supplied. The water is so clear you can see fish darting around coral just a few metres offshore.

What you don’t get, and this is worth noting, is structured entertainment. There’s no curated itinerary or guided trek; you essentially carve your own day. That freedom is refreshing and a much-needed respite from the usual demands of life.

If you want a lived-in moment of Fiji – sun on your skin, laughter around you, water that invites you in, Malamala delivers.

Pro tip: Book ahead to secure a beachside cabana or poolside day bed. All prices and options can be viewed at malamalabeachclub.com (where you can also peruse the menu and decide your choices ahead of time). Our recommendation: the deconstructed Kaiviti Kokoda (one of the most delicious things we ate on our Fiji trip).
