Coastal charm: Hahei

Cathedral Cove and the adjacent Hahei coastal area and community were among the many affected long-term by the aftereffects of Cyclone Gabrielle. However, brighter times look to be on the horizon with the popular track looking set to reopen in time for summer 2024/2025.

A recent DOC visitor experience survey undertaken with the support of Ngāti Hei showed that Mautohe Cathedral Cove remains a top New Zealand visitor destination despite the track closure – evidence of its extreme interest to visitors.

While the track has been closed, access has been only by boat or kayak, but the destination has remained popular. DOC is opting for a temporary walking access reinstatement solution, which should see the track available to visitors for summer 2024/25.

This is good news for local businesses, in particular Hahei Beach Resort, which includes a 500-metre stretch of Hahei Beach at the gateway to the world-renowned tourist attraction.
“There’s still plenty to enjoy here,” says Hahei Beach Resort general manager Grant Kilby.  “Don’t forget to enjoy the drive here. With the new bridge open on SH25 and less traffic on the roads before the Christmas rush, spring is actually our favourite time of year on the peninsula.

“Once you get to Hahei, it’s easy just to park up on the beachfront. All our sites have beach access so you can switch to Hahei time and just relax. The galleries, tennis courts, and Hahei village are walkable from the resort, and if you fancy getting out on the water, Cathedral Cove kayaks launch off the beach in front of the resort. Surfcasting at sunset is a fun way to soak in the surf. We love seeing couples in their deck chairs with wine in hand watching the sun go down.

“Also, as we come into spring, sunshine hours are longer, and you can see the flowering varieties of rare pohutukawas and a chat with the locals while you wait for your morning brew. That’s when you hear where the fish are biting, if the dolphins are in the bay or check the tide times for Hot Water Beach.

“The longer evenings are ideal for alfresco dining vibes on The Deck serving authentic Italian woodfired pizzas, gourmet burgers, and a superb cocktail menu at the on-site bar.

“Of course, we are delighted the Cathedral Cove walkway will open for summer. Visitors travel from around the country and around the world to see the Narnia-famous landmark,” says Grant.

“It’s an easy walk to access the ever-changing views of the coastline with the turquoise waters, the white cliffs, and pink sands, it’s truly stunning.

“The Cathedral Cove walkway also opens up Stingray and Gemstone Bays, which are stunning spots for a picnic or secret snorkelling spots on the edge of the Te Whanganui A Hei Marine Reserve.”
