Temperatures might be reaching record lows during these short winter days, but it’s still a great time to be on the road in your RV.
There are just a few things to make life easier and keep you safe on the roads.
1. Make sure your mobile home is serviced and prepared for cool weather.
2. If buying a new RV, look for one with a diesel heater – preferably one that can be used while you’re underway.
3. Make sure your diesel tank never slips below half full.
4. Containers of extra drinking water for cooking, cleaning and flushing should be kept in a heated compartment, so it never freezes.
5. Have extra bedding and extra warm clothing on hand.
6. Ensure your cell phone is always fully charged.
7. Tyre chains are a must for many areas.
8. Stock the cupboards and keep cash on hand for emergencies.
9. If you’re going off the well-worn tracks, invest in (or hire) an emergency locator beacon (EPIRB).
10. A small gas cooker powered by white fuel will not freeze. Use in a well-ventilated space.
11. Keep your first aid kit up to date.
12. A small diesel generator will be great for topping up power if you are stranded.
13. Travel later in the day to avoid black ice.
14. If the weather is bad avoid unnecessary travel: after all, you are already home.
