Caravan, campervan and pop top renovations are a constant source of individuality, inspiration and innovation

Together with Motorhomes, Caravans & Destinations, Resene has shone a light on some spectacular projects around New Zealand, each one packed with personality and an example of what can be created through the careful selection of colour and texture.

If you’re looking for some successful colour combinations to inspire your next project, this compilation of completed renovations offers a rainbow of options to consider.

Adrenalin crush

This vibrant, high-energy renovation was the perfect outcome for a family of ‘active relaxers’ and for continuing a family tradition of enjoying the ‘classic Kiwi experience’.

The owners chose an energetic colour scheme to transform this 1978 17ft Oxford caravan, opting for Resene Adrenalin as the hero — although it was a close call between that and Resene Hyperactive.

For the exterior, a modernised version of the original colour scheme was chosen, using Resene Acrythane 805 (a professional vehicle paint) tinted to Resene Adrenalin, Resene White and a custom Resene peach for the bottom panel colour. (For a similar colour, try Resene Awaken).

Resene Adrenalin was applied using an airless sprayer, although the home DIYer could apply Resene Uracryl using a brush or roller.

The goal was to create a vibrant pop of colour – nothing muddy, brown or peachy – the vision was for a true orange which was zingy.

Mission well accomplished.

Coastal vibes

Calm coastal vibes were created by combining three harmonious Resene colours

Classic beachy blues and whites are a popular choice for caravan interiors, creating a relaxed coastal feeling of calm and freshness.

For this retro caravan renovation, the owners wanted a ‘beachy bach on wheels’, so after much consideration chose Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Juniper, paired with Resene SpaceCote Flat White on the ceiling and a fawny grey Resene Titania on the trims.

The choice of Resene Juniper was because it was more of a ‘retro blue,’, well suited to the 1978 caravan interior styling, tying into the coastal colour theme with Resene Titania on the trims, vinyl flooring in a driftwood colour and pale blue squabs to create the feeling of a beach getaway.

Strong and stylish

After much research, this strong Resene Armadillo colour was used in Resene Uracryl 403, a high performance, two-component finish coat with perfect durability for life on the open road

When it comes to durability and good looks, choosing the correct exterior paint is vital. This strong and stylish camper, called Coddiwomple, is a former delivery van, given a loving makeover from top to tail.

Having redecorated many houses, the owners knew they wanted to use Resene paint on both the interior and exterior and say that using Resene was a no-brainer.

“The paint is very high quality, and we like that they can mix any colour you can think of.”

The decision for a white interior was made early on, to help the van look more spacious. The final choice was Resene Alabaster, with the kickboards, and two cupboard doors painted in Resene Coastal Blue.
Covering up the van’s original turquoise exterior was a bit trickier and finding the perfect grey/blue led to the discovery of Resene Armadillo, choosing Resene Uracryl 403, a high performance, two-component finish coat, with excellent resistance to abrasion, moisture, oils, alkalis and acids – perfect for life on the open road.

Rebuilt with respect

Renovating their home together proved valuable experience for the larger than expected undertaking of restoring a vintage

Life on the road: Troy and Cathie Sissons
Choosing the right shade of grey and white is crucial for a harmonious result. These two Resene choices are a popular combination, and adding a pop of colour and texture with this vibrant floral Resene wallpaper transforms this compact space, without overwhelming the senses

Troy and Cathie Sissons had been renovating their house using Resene paints, so it was a no-brainer to use them on their caravan. Troy has been a commercial painter and through his years of experience, really rates Resene paints.

“They’re very durable, they flow on easily, and they’re good value,” he says.

The couple also chose Resene wallpaper to add a bright pop of floral as a nod to the era and nostalgia of their CI Munro Sprite, while giving the interior a strong visual focal point. The finished result is enormously appealing and the couple receive heaps of compliments, particularly around the use of Resene Wallpaper Collection RD576 and 408355.

Ambulance rescue

Staying true to this heritage of this decommissioned ambulance was important, hence the choice or Resene White for the exterior, with an uplifting blue to add some visual interest to the interior.

A professional looking finish was a key priority for this deregistered ambulance renovation. Undertaken by a Palmerston North paramedic with both a personal and professional interest in this transformation, the project was shaped by reaching out to likeminded Facebook groups and benefiting from other people’s experiences.

Resene paints were chosen to bring the final vision to life and ensure quality finishing touches throughout. To ensure a durable furniture finish, cabinetry was painted with Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel and a Resene primer undercoat in the colour choice of the fresh Resene Anakiwa.

Resene White was the perfect exterior option, working in harmony with the restful interior shades for a soothing palette, whether enjoying time inside or outdoors.

Top of the pops

Not all yellows are created equal. Eliminating the options resulted in this final colour palette to ensure plenty of sunny personality.

Sunshine shades of mellow yellow encapsulate the ‘joie de vivre’ of this vintage pop top. Whilst remaining charmingly true to its 1980s heritage, but with a delightful modern twist, the result is a much-loved family getaway.

Having decided on exploring the blissful pairings of grey and yellow, and with the extensive Resene colour palette at their disposal, preferences were carefully narrowed down to the harmonious combination of Resene Witch Haze, paired with Resene Quarter Moonbeam and Resene Geyser. 
