In this month’s Tech Corner, Tech Guy (our version of The Stig) spends a few weeks exploring the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7
Samsung is leading the charge in bringing back one of the original merits of the smartphone: portability and convenience. With some modern phones now edging towards the size of mini tablets, the Galaxy Z Flip7 stands out for delivering true portability without sacrificing performance.
The Flip7 truly delivers the best of both worlds: compact convenience and big-screen brilliance. It’s ultra-compact when folded but unfolds to twice its size with a 6.9-inch main display and a barely noticeable crease — a big improvement over the Flip6. With this phone, beauty literally unfolds in your hand.
It’s almost like having two super smartphones in one. The first thing you notice is how compact it feels when folded; it fits perfectly in your palm (and pocket). The new 4.1-inch edge-to-edge cover screen is a huge upgrade from the Flip6’s smaller 3.4-inch version, letting you check notifications and run apps without opening the phone. It’s perfect for a quick glance — no more awkward phone-flipping mid-conversation.
And with AI built specifically for the foldable form, it doesn’t take long to adapt to the benefits this expansive screen offers and wonder how you ever settled for less. Screen visibility is also top-tier, with Samsung Vision Booster and up to 2600 nits of peak brightness, the Galaxy Z Flip7 stays brilliantly visible even in direct sunlight.
The Flip7’s camera is seriously good. It has a 50-megapixel main lens that keeps pictures clear and steady, even if your hands aren’t steady after your third coffee. There’s also a 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens that’s perfect for landscapes or fitting everyone into the shot, so no one feels left out. On the front, a 10-megapixel selfie camera makes faces sharp and bright, no filters required. Colours look natural, faces stay crisp, and low-light shots come out clean without the need for flash. It’s the kind of setup that makes every photo look outstanding — so good your actual camera might start getting jealous.
When it comes to video, the Flip7 punches well above its weight. It records crisp 4K video at up to 60fps, giving everything from family clips to travel reels a smooth, professional look. There’s also slow-motion up to 240fps in Full HD, perfect for dramatic pet zoomies or that cinematic splash of milk hitting your morning coffee. Thanks to Samsung’s smart image stabilisation and AI video processing, shaky hands and tricky lighting are a thing of the past. The result? Footage that looks polished, vibrant, and effortlessly cinematic, no editing suite required.
While the screen is a clear standout (vibrant detail, crisp visuals, and frictionless scrolling), special mention must also go to the audio. The speakers are crisp and loud, and you can enjoy movies or music for longer thanks to Samsung bumping up the battery to 4300 mAh (up from 4,000 mAh on the Flip6), ensuring lasting power even with the bigger display.
The Flip7 also includes intuitive voice AI, making it a seamless assistant that adapts and anticipates your needs. One of the standout features is the ability to trigger the camera from your Samsung Watch — half-open the phone, and it doubles as a tripod. Perfect for selfies or group shots without the awkward balancing act or asking a stranger for help.
The Flip7 isn’t just a flashy foldable; it’s practical, fast, and incredibly convenient. Its compact size makes it the ideal travel companion for everyday adventures.
Fun facts
The Galaxy Z Flip7’s hinge can hold its position at multiple angles and is rated to withstand hundreds of thousands of folds — that’s years of flipping without breaking a sweat.
The Flip7 has one hidden danger — once you start flipping it open and closed, it’s almost impossible to stop. It’s weirdly satisfying.
Did you know? Samsung’s foldable phones now use recycled glass and aluminium, part of the brand’s push toward sustainable tech. Smart design that’s eco-smart too.
Tried and tested: Samsung Galaxy Watch8
The Watch8 takes everything good about the Watch7 and refines it. The sleeker curved edges replace the older perfect-circle design, and at just 8.6 mm thin, it’s light and comfortable on the wrist.
Brightness is a standout, jumping from 2000 nits on the Watch7 to 3000 nits here. That’s a 50% boost, like upgrading from a desk lamp to a floodlight. The Watch8 stays perfectly clear even under the harshest midday sun. Samsung has slightly boosted the battery to support this brighter display, so endurance isn’t compromised.
Software and AI integration make the Watch8 genuinely smart. Gemini works like a personal assistant on your wrist, handling reminders, workouts, and questions before you even reach for your phone. In day-to-day life, that means you can check the weather while making coffee, reply to a message hands-free, or start your morning run with a simple voice command. It even learns your routine, offering sleep tips, stress reminders, and wellness nudges at the right moments. The new AI Running Coach builds custom training plans and gives live feedback, basically a personal trainer (minus the shouting). The Watch8 feels less like a tracker and more like a helpful companion that keeps you organised, motivated, and on time.
Final thoughts
After three weeks using both the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 and the Galaxy Watch8 together, I’ve genuinely rethought my perception of Samsung. The Flip7 isn’t just a flashy foldable — it’s practical, fast, and incredibly convenient. Paired with the Watch8, they form a winning pair that actually makes day-to-day life easier: smarter AI, better integration, and thoughtful design that fits any lifestyle.
I used to think switching brands would feel like a compromise, but after experiencing what Samsung’s latest has to offer, I love the direction the brand is taking. The Flip7 and Watch8 aren’t just impressive tech — they’re a reminder that the right tools can completely change how you see and use technology.
Fun facts:
Samsung’s first product wasn’t electronic at all; it was dried fish, vegetables, and noodles.
Founded in 1938 by Lee Byung-chul in Daegu, South Korea, Samsung means ‘Three Stars‘, symbolising something big, powerful, and everlasting. It wasn’t until the late 1960s that Samsung moved into electronics, starting with black-and-white televisions, the foundation of the Samsung we know today.
