Tried and tested: FUJIFILM X half

Capturing and sharing precious moments is one of the delights of travelling and adventure. While the ability to take quality photos has changed enormously in the last decade as phone cameras have improved, there’s a subtle swing back to the era of compact cameras for those looking for a more engaging photographic experience.

The FUJIFILM X half is an exciting digital camera offering the best of both worlds. Lightweight and compact, the optical viewfinder harks back to the nostalgia of vintage film cameras. The retro styling is also a nod to the days of analogue photography plus, in Film Camera mode, the ‘film advance lever’ reinforces the feel of using a film camera, alongside disabling the LCD screen so you have to wait to develop your ‘digital film roll’ to see the outcome.

At the same time, FUJIFILM X half uses modern tech to deliver vertical shooting and movie recording (perfect for those wanting to create digital content), a touch LCD screen, light leak options and so much more. It allows users to combine two still images or movies into a single in-camera composition, so there’s plenty of formats to play around with.

Like any new camera, allow some time to get familiar with its many options – having so much control over everything from ISO settings and exposure modes to filter modes and shutter speed does means a lot of variables to get your mind around. That said, the nifty features such as creating film grain effect or using filters to shape the mood and aesthetic you want, really does open the viewfinder to a wider world.

Setting up the app to transfer files directly to your phone or computer is refreshingly straightforward. For so many features, don’t expect this to be in the ’budget buy’ market. It retails for $1449. You can view more info on the shooting experiences and hone into the specifics at FUJIFILM.com
