A Rum Deal

As the nights draw in, a rum cocktail is a wonderful way to warm yourself inside.

Hot buttered rum

Originally intended for medicinal purposes, this warming drink dates back to the 1650s.

Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons soft brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 drops vanilla extract
  • 1 stick cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 60mls dark rum
  • 120ml water

Method

Combine the butter, vanilla, sugar and spices well. Combine rum and 2 tablespoons of the spiced butter mixture in a heatproof mug or glass. Top with hot water and stir until all ingredients are well combined. Garnish with a cinnamon stick and serve.

Did you know?

Rum is the oldest spirit in the world. It has been used as a medicine; doctors prescribed it as an antiseptic and for disease control, while pirates drank it to prevent disease like flu and scurvy. It was even used as a stress reliever until 1917, when the American Medical Association stated ‘its use in therapeutics as a tonic or similar or for food has no scientific value’.
