Island time: Waya Island Resort Fiji

Given that Fiji consists of more than 330 islands, it’s not surprising to realise that there are still hidden gems to discover. Waya Island Resort is an intimate, adult-only boutique offering in Fiji’s Yasawa Islands – perfect for those looking to truly relax, unwind and enjoy a luxurious pace of life.

From the moment you first arrive (by boat or helicopter) to the welcoming sounds of Fijian song, Waya Island Resort unfolds like a delicious secret slowly revealing its treasures.

Having recently celebrated its second birthday, the resort is pristine, beautifully considered and wonderfully intimate. The serene surroundings are ideal for honeymooners, as a romantic getaway or an indulgent stay with friends or family.

Although offering all the delights of a new development, this unique resort is also deeply steeped in the beauty and traditions of Fiji. With the project having started 17 years ago, locals have created a mesmerising infrastructure of hand-built stonework, curving its way between the villas and down to the ocean. It’s a beguiling blend of old meets new, in the most successful way.

Every villa and bure has its own unique outlook

This slow reveal has allowed for lush landscaping, mature trees and exterior walls framed by ficus and ivy – not only aesthetically pleasing, but also part of the resort’s sustainability programme as it provides an extra natural layer of insulation, helping keep the villas cool.

With a maximum of 50 guests spread amongst 25 thoughtfully curated villas and bures, there’s plenty of freedom to enjoy your own private spaces, or to lounge poolside and meet new friends from all corners of the globe.

It’s worth noting that daily staff numbers vary from between 50 and 70, so there’s no shortage of attentive and friendly crew onsite. With the Waya team affectionately known as the Vuvale (family), many come from the landowning village Yalobi (pronounced Yalombee) and are happy to share the history and culture of this special corner of Fiji.

Effortless ease

Thanks to daily menu options, decision making is effortless. Meal presentation is 10/10, with a focus is on island-grown produce, à la carte menus and theme nights including Tastes of India and Taste of Fiji. The poolside bar is open all day and evening, along with an addictive all-day pizza menu.

With secluded spots dotted around the main lagoon and surrounded by a tapestry of rolling hills and swaying palms, this is a true island experience, in a setting that is both intimate and expansive.

On one side, the calm lagoon invites snorkelling, paddleboarding, or simply floating under the sun; on the other, the rising hills are perfect for walks that reveal panoramic vistas of the surrounding islands and sparkling waters.

Excursions include hand-line fishing, manta ray swims (seasonal between May and October), snorkel tours and village visits. Without leaving the island, guests can also choose to participate in weaving, hat making, kava ceremonies and other daily activities.

Relax and enjoy the sound of the ocean and birds as you doze in bed or join a guide on an early morning climb up to the top of the Island for memorable views of dramatic rock peaks and the surrounding ocean. Pro-tip: a reasonable level of fitness is required for this walk, but it’s well worth the effort.

The Villa life

With each accommodation nestled into its surrounding landscape, every villa and bure has its own unique outlook. Ocean-view villas perch on gentle slopes or near the beach, offering private verandas where guests can watch the changing tides and enjoy the golden light of dawn. Hammocks softly rock between coconut trees – it’s everything the Fiji dream promises – but here it delivers.

Two Deluxe Grand Villas offer their own plunge pool surrounded by tropical garden and rainforest, along with dedicated personal service.

The accommodation features open, airy interiors that blend seamlessly with the outdoors

From this elite option to the oceanfront and deluxe villas and deluxe garden bures, each shares the same meticulous attention to detail. Open, airy interiors blend seamlessly with the outdoors; the scent of the ocean mingles with the faint aroma of native flora, creating a sensory experience that lingers. Outdoor showers allow you to experience the most glamorous version of ‘deserted island’ life – with a canopy of overhead trees your only view.

There’s no scrimping on the luxuries either. Pure Fiji toiletries are replaced daily, and every convenience has been carefully considered and catered for – from laundry service to refreshments delivered to your hammock as you soak in the tranquil surroundings.

Pool Time

Even the resort’s central spaces, like the pool and spa, feel as if they’ve grown naturally from the island. The pool has been cleverly designed to make you feel as though you’re slowly walking into the sea, and the spa is tucked beneath palms, where the rustle of leaves and the gentle sound of water create a cocoon of calm. Every corner of Waya Island emphasises its natural setting. This is truly an environment where you can choose our own pace of life. While the ocean offers snorkelling and low tide walks, it does pay to have waterproof footwear as underfoot is rocky rather than sandy.

Undoubtedly the pool is central to the island’s social rhythm; a calm oasis where mornings are gentle with coffee in hand and afternoons hum with the quiet joy of relaxing and unwinding. It’s here that strangers become friends over shared laughter, and mealtimes present an opportunity to socialise or if you prefer, opt for a more private beachside setting.

For moments of pure indulgence, the resort’s spa is a standout. Perched above the villas with views that stretch to the horizon, whether it’s a traditional Fijian treatment or a custom facial, the sublime attention to detail makes it easy to lose track of time entirely.

Whilst the resort has much to choose from, we found ourselves shaping each day to include sampling the various spa bookings, keen to rediscover that sense of deep relaxation that is rarely experienced.

Regardless of whether your preferences are for rest or adventure, daily life on Waya Island is guided by gentle invitations rather than schedules. Guests can join in the range of daily activities (from cooking classes to guided snorkelling) or simply choose to drift in a hammock with a book and watch the sun turn the sky molten gold.

There are so many activities to choose from, including hikes with spectacular viewpoints

By night, the island’s atmosphere shifts seamlessly from the tranquil to more vibrant. Communal dinners and cultural performances create moments of connection that remain long after the plates are cleared.

Waya Island Resort is a gentle reminder that travel is as much about discovering inner rhythms as it is about exploring new places. Between the poolside laughter, the spa’s quiet luxury, and the genuine warmth of everyone who calls this island home, it’s hard not to leave with a lighter heart and a true sense of wellbeing.
