Discover Hamilton

Whether you’re a repeat visitor or a first-time guest to Hamilton and Cambridge, September is the perfect month to plan a trip to the mighty Waikato, timed to also enjoy the NZMCA Hamilton Motorhome, Caravan and Leisure Show.

While various attractions such as the Hamilton Gardens are well regarded and recognised (globally, not just locally), along with popular spots such as Waikato Museum, Hamilton Zoo, Waikato River cruises and Lake Karapiro, there are many other delights to discover.

Alongside the region’s more obvious attributes, there are a multitude other options to explore and experience – so plan ahead, bring your bikes and walking shoes, and add some new discoveries to your must-do list. Lisa Potter shares her local recommendations to make this year’s adventure particularly memorable.

Hamilton Gardens

Geometry meets romance at the Italian Renaissance Garden

It’s impossible not to have Hamilton Gardens at the top of any list involving Hamilton’s best. Both a living museum of garden design and a visual wonderland; Hamilton Gardens need little introduction. The world-renowned attraction just keeps evolving and improving and repeat visitors will be aware of the captivation of new and ever-changing vistas. A storybook journey through time, culture, and imagination; spread across 45 hectares, each themed garden feels like stepping into another world. Travel through history and meander through the Egyptian Garden (complete with hieroglyphs and a tomb entrance), the Italian Renaissance Garden (where geometry meets romance and divine symmetry), or the Tudor-style knot garden (full of intricate designs, fantasy beasts and secret symbols). Step into fantasy in The Surrealist Garden with its oversized sculptures and topsy-turvy designs or embrace the Zen in the Japanese Garden of Contemplation. Te Parapara is New Zealand’s only example of a traditional Maaori garden, showcasing pre-European gardening techniques, indigenous planting practices, food production methods and the cultural significance of plants. Although the carparks open daily from 6.15am to 9pm, the Enclosed Gardens and Gallagher Visitor Centre are open daily from 10am to 5pm. In case it’s been a while since you visited, entry to the 18 Enclosed Gardens is now $20 (and it’s worth every penny).
